Composting in Brazil’s Mercado Libre

Mercado Libre, Inc. is an Argentine company that operates online marketplace dedicated to e-commerce and online auctions. The are the largest online buying and selling community in Latin America, employing over 2500 staff in Brazil.

In 2016, Mercado Libre relocated its Brazilian headquarters to new offices in São Paulo, Brazil. The 183,000 square feet complex, named Melicidade, held a cafeteria, auditorium, gym, beauty parlor, meeting and training rooms, and a recreation area. The office has a capacity for 2,000 employees and during lunch, the on-site restaurant has the capacity to serve 450 people at the same time.

Reinforcing MercadoLivre’s commitment to reducing its environmental impacts and the communities where it operates, sustainability is one of the pillars of Melicidade! The headquarters has 2,000 solar panels on the roof, which generate part of the energy consumed by the complex, and is Brazil’s largest solar plant.

Food waste is composted in Oklin’s composting machine and over 16,000kg of organic fertilizer has been donated to the surrounding gardens.
