Macau International Airport (MIA) always bears its social responsibility and commits to protecting the environment in order to develop a “Green Airport”. They have successfully reduced its carbon emissions, and has become accredited within the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme at Level 2 – “Reduction”. In addition to the sustainable development at Macau International Airport, they have carried out a food waste recycling program by installing Oklin’s composting machine and has begun composting food waste onsite.
Participating entites include McDonald’s, Servair Macau, Macau International Airport Restaurants in collaboration with East Sun Cleaning Servies Ltd. and Brilliant Landscaping & Gardening Co. Ltd.
Food waste such as meat, rice, pasta, vegetables and fruits is separated from general waste stream, and delivered to the composting machine for processing. After the weekly offload, greenery staff collect the compost and apply it to surrounding landscape. They have since reduced the use of chemical fertilizers, opting to use the organic fertilizer generated from food waste instead.
