Mui Wo Island is a rural town on the eastern coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong with a population of approximately 5500 residents.
The Hong Kong Outlying Islands Women’s Association (OIWA) coordinated a food waste recycling scheme where participating families are provided with air-tight food waste containers to store food waste. The containers are then collected and emptied into one of the two GG50 food waste composters installed at Mui Wo. The compost collected from the machine is used in organic farming and distributed to local communities.
Apart from recycling food waste collected from the community, this program also serves as an education tool for schools in the community to learn about food waste and benefits to composting.

The Secretary for the Environment visited the food waste recycling facilities in Mui Wo to learn more about the implementation of food waste recycling in the community. Reducing food waste is the main target of the Government’s waste management policy on Hong Kong.
